No single narrative write-up of the 2011 Brisbane convention was published at the time — instead the event was covered through a photo competition and photographic review in In-Stream, a page of convention photos in ANGFA News, and this note from national Treasurer Tony Tucceri:

“ANGFA Convention Brisbane 2011: What an enjoyable convention, Brisbane was fantastic and lived up to its reputation as the Mecca of ANGFA. It was great to meet up in person with over a hundred ANGFA members and friends. And we most whole-heartedly appreciate the financial success of the convention, because ANGFA QLD made an excellent profit and donated $1905.03 to ANGFA National. The hard work is well worth it and we are very appreciative to all members for their support. Without you there would be no ANGFA. The next convention will be held in Melbourne in 2013.”

ANGFA Photographic Competition

The inaugural ANGFA photographic competition was held this year in combination with the convention, judged by Gunther Schmida, with a prize of $100 plus a trophy. It was won by Keith Martin.

Keith provided the following technical details of how he captured and processed the image, and the origins of the fish: “This photo was taken with a Nikon D90 DSLR camera and Nikkor 105 mm macro lens. I used a Nikon Speedlight on-camera flash set to ¼ power plus a bank of four AC flashguns mounted above the tank. The picture was taken at ISO 200; F19; 1/90 s manual settings. The raw image was processed for cropping, sharpening, and some minor adjustments for exposure and contrast. These Threadfin Rainbows originated in the Weipa area and I have had them for several years. They happily share a 2’ tank with a few McCulloch’s rainbows and spotted blue-eyes. I call it my ‘swamp tank’. I was lucky in this shot to get the two males displaying, plus the female all in a row. It is interesting to note that in this species; the male-male displays consist of simple fin raising, while the male-female interactions include a rapid fin-flicking display, sometimes called ‘helicoptering’.” — Keith
